The changes keep on coming

Apr 29, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Well, we got some more bad news last week. Looks like Charise’s teaching partner has decided that she needs to return to work full time (totally understandable given her own personal upheaval). Unfortunately the consequences of this is that it effectively leaves Charise with no job to return to after summer break (though she is guaranteed something by virtue of her tenure status, or so I understand).
I think the hardest part for Charise is that it looks like she is going to loose her classroom where she has 10+ years of emotional investment… oh and stuff, boxes and boxes of stuff.. that, I think, I’m going to get stuck hauling :p. Anyway this is pretty disappointing and not a change she was looking to make. But, hopefully, everything is going to work out for the best, one way or another.

On the plus side, we are starting to go through the motions of setting up a little side (tax-sheltered) business to help defray some costs and get a little revenue over the summer. More on that later.

There are a few new pictures of Kaily over in the gallery.

Get what you pay for, free yahoo dvr tech

Apr 26, 2006 in Tech, Game, MCE

Yahoo released there free meedio player yesterday. In the eternal search for a better convergence mouse trap I gave it a whirl. Sadly it didn’t stack up very well to MCE or MythTV, though I think the music player was better then Myth. Not like that is hard to manage though.

No randomization options for photos (Uh, hello anyone awake there).

No transition effects

Very limited tuner support. Most tuners like dvico work fine through the generic window drivers with 3rd party apps, but for some reason the yahoo offering only has proprietary support for a couple tuners.

No sort albums

Under settings, there is no settings, just a links to various documents like the EUL, weird.

Worked fine with my stream zap remote but the menu structure lacks short cuts, I had to walk all the way back out of the file structure each time to go somewhere new… I might have missed somthing here but it seemed pretty kludgy to me.

It did work though, played music, pictures and divx files fine without effort. Still nicest thing I can say about it is that it’s free.

Charise’s head is healing up nicely.

Easter

Apr 21, 2006 in General, General Family

There are some new pictures up in the Gallery. All and all we had a pretty good easter. The Egg hunt wasn’t rained out but it was a little damp and gusty. kaily had fun anyway and so did we. I think next year we are going to offer to help setup the Egg hunt and what not.

Christa went home last week as well and we have been managing (successfully I think) to get by with one less pair of hands. A bit of a mixed blessing to be sure but so far so good, which is to say no major wheels have come spinning off.

So, with that, Happy belated Easter everyone :)

Happy Birthday Charise!

Apr 08, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Yep it’s that time again, Charise’s Birthday today! You forgot? I suggest Amazon wish list, and blame the shipping delay on them. She is the ripe old age of 35 today, I would make an infirm joke but… :)

spam attack

Apr 04, 2006 in General

Seems like about once a week this site gets bombed with a 100 or so spam/commentspam messages buried in the system. Amazing how much free time some people seem to have, and how they use it to waste the time of others…. Anyway after looking over my options again I decided to not use a user punishment system (strict captcha that allways make commenter’s type in annoying cryptic codes to post), instead I turned on moderation… but well, that turned into a lot of work for me and slowed things down on the site. Blogs and comments should be as real time as possible IMO.
Now I have installed a more auto magic filter system (spam karma2) which hopefully will address the majority of offenders. So far I have black listed a couple domains and I just turned on auto black listing for key words. Including the most common misspellings for everyone’s favorite libido stimulate. If for some odd reason you find yourself wanting to use such a phrase in a comment here be aware that the system will black list your IP without notice to me…

Like most things related to the seemingly endless battle against obnoxious people and idiotic would be marketers that feel the need to try and blast their worthless message brazenly across any available space or medium (no matter how totaly inapropreate), there might be a few slight incontinences or hiccups with the new system in place. Just let me know vie direct email if you notice any problems.
