Surgery on the 8th

Jan 25, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Well, we are scheduled for surgery on Feb 8th at UCSF.Crazy days.

Will be headed up the day before to drop stuff off at my Moms and to meet the “team”. Also Charise will be getting something called a stealth MRI… not sure what is stealthy about it since you go into the box, but the she will have the cool little bio plug around her head afterwords and have to keep them on all night. Some of the tech around this stuff is pretty interesting but the medical jargon is thick enough to make it difficult to distill the details.

Non-secreting

Jan 22, 2006 in General

Ok so we got the blood work back that we had down here. Good news, the tumor is non-secreting, meaning that it is very unlikely to be cancerous. This is great since it makes things a lot less complex and the potential for rapid spread of new growths unlikely.

The MD

Charise did a bit of googling, turns out that Dr. Parsa is in fact quite the man. He is a MD and PHD and is widely published on tumors, and has done a lot or research both into the type of tumor that Charise has as well as the specific area of the brain. We read one the papers that he had co published with one of the other head guys at UCSF. I’m a smart guy but I didn’t understand a word of it. In fact I think I might have gotten stupider reading it as my brain melted…feh specialists :) , but anyway; I think this is very good news and we are definitely going to be meeting with the right person next week. I feel pretty reassured by what we found out and I think we did the right thing to wait instead of pushing forward with the Dr. down here that we had talked to, though he was very nice and very helpful.

Waiting… not something either one of us dose well, I think if the ball had not stared to move this week it would have been Charise going at it with a can opener and a soup spoon. She is very ready to have the dam thing out of her head.

whoop! Progress

Jan 19, 2006 in Charise, General Family

We now have an appointment for next tuesday afternoon with UCSF (Charise called and chased people this morning). A Dr. Parsa, who apparently is supposed to be the best person for her type of tumor (according to the scheduler, so I’m not sure what that means). I’m going to try and get us out of town for a couple days I think.

UCSF

Jan 18, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Well, we got a call from the person who apparently puts you into the computer, so that some other person can call you back in a couple days to schedule the consult (not the surgery mind you). *sigh* whole thing is just moving so…slow… but at least it is in fact moving.

Slow and benign

Jan 14, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Ok, some more good news. My Mom pulled some strings, through a friend of hers, to get UCSF to take some action, this was helpful since they completely lost or misrouted the original stuff we sent last week. Based on the data they have a UCSF neurologist said they think it is a slow growth tumor, meaning not a time bomb, and probable benign, meaning not cancerous. That pretty much agrees with what we heard this morning, which is reassuring. Nothing is of course a guarantee.

Anyway we should have an appointment mid next week, and then hopefully go up there shortly their after for an exam and to schedule things.

This is a nice relief. We have been having a lot stress around getting things going with them.

Charise health update

Jan 14, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Hi Folks,

I have been a little uncommunicative lately and thought I would give a quick update on why and what’s going on.

Recently Charise went in for an eye checkup because she was having some headaches and blurred vision, after finding some abnormalities they sent her to get an MRI, and to see her Doctor. This was actually a very good catch on the part of the Ophthalmologist that was there.

Unfortunately she was diagnosed with 5-6cm brain tumor in the back of her head near the spine (sort of between the halves of the brain). Fortunately, the tumor does appear to be operable based on a meeting with a neurologist today. The tumor is also in a relatively, as such things go, good spot for surgical removal without lots of collateral trauma (it is too large for non invasive techniques). Also some preliminary indicators through die saturation suggest that it might be benign. However we are waiting on some blood work and won’t know anything for sure until a pathologist can actually examine it directly. Still all good news given the potential down sides.

We are currently beating the bush to get an appointment with UCSF, which outside of John Hopkins, is supposed to be the best in the world for this type of procedure. Idealy we will have the procedure done there.

Right now we are looking at probable a week post op hospital stay and then a two month or so recovery at home, however all that subject to best case scenarios.

Well that is the long and short of it, needless to say we are little stressed but after today’s meeting we are actually feeling fairly secure and confident that things are going to turn out ok. Of all the possible things that this could have been (MS etc) this is in many ways is the least threatening and most actionable.

I will probable be in and out of work a bit leading up to the surgery but Charise will stay out until she is fully recovered (still working on that arm thing as well).

Thanks for your patience and understanding

Pictures are up

Jan 02, 2006 in Charise, General Family, Kaily, griffon

I thought I had some snaps from when Aunt Ariana was here but I’m haivng some trouble figuring out where they went (they didn’t spool off the camera with everything else). I’m sure they will turn up though. In the mean time here are the shots from xmass2005 and there about including Kaily meeting Elmo.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Specifically happy new years! Thank you all for the great gifts (we still have a couple folks to drop by wearing the old santa hat), we like you all liked yours too. I’ll have pictures up tomorrow, if all goes well.
