Off to the OR

Feb 08, 2006 in Charise

They doped Charise up and wheeled her off to the OR at 8:35am. Dr. Parasa came by and checked in, he mentioned the room was ready so there shoudn’t be a lot more hurry up and wait. Charise was allmost out cold within a minute or so of them putting the stuff in the IV.

on the gerney

Feb 08, 2006 in Charise, General

we are here. It’s a little after 7am and we have had one dr consult and now the nurse is doing her thing. Anstishioligist will be by around 8am to start her IV.

Thanks for the great comments!

When I’m bloging from my phone I don’t get a chance to see the comments as they come in. So I’m playing catch up, I’ll make sure charise see’s all the well wishes. I’ll post contact info when we have a real room and number. The first day or so she will be in the ICU and at least for a while after the surgery be incubated.

The lighting in UCSF, at least where we where tonight, was pretty awful giving everything a bit of a creepy green look at least on the old camera phone (it wasn’t all that bad in person, though a little grim).

Belly of the beast

Feb 07, 2006 in Charise

We are deep inside ucsf. Endless hallways, no windows. Charise had some prep work for IV’s.
Oh they just came to get her to place her fiducially placed (the whatever head implants for the detailed MRI mapping)

checked in

Feb 07, 2006 in Charise

Met with the knockout drug dr (actualy was an MD). Got the skinny on process. Check in is 6:30 am, I gather that being first is a good thing. It’s not harash Charise can eat up untill midnight, not that she has a huge apetite at this point.
Next we are off for the many hour stealth MRI.

Surgery on the 8th

Jan 25, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Well, we are scheduled for surgery on Feb 8th at UCSF.Crazy days.

Will be headed up the day before to drop stuff off at my Moms and to meet the “team”. Also Charise will be getting something called a stealth MRI… not sure what is stealthy about it since you go into the box, but the she will have the cool little bio plug around her head afterwords and have to keep them on all night. Some of the tech around this stuff is pretty interesting but the medical jargon is thick enough to make it difficult to distill the details.

The MD

Jan 19, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Charise did a bit of googling, turns out that Dr. Parsa is in fact quite the man. He is a MD and PHD and is widely published on tumors, and has done a lot or research both into the type of tumor that Charise has as well as the specific area of the brain. We read one the papers that he had co published with one of the other head guys at UCSF. I’m a smart guy but I didn’t understand a word of it. In fact I think I might have gotten stupider reading it as my brain melted…feh specialists :) , but anyway; I think this is very good news and we are definitely going to be meeting with the right person next week. I feel pretty reassured by what we found out and I think we did the right thing to wait instead of pushing forward with the Dr. down here that we had talked to, though he was very nice and very helpful.

Waiting… not something either one of us dose well, I think if the ball had not stared to move this week it would have been Charise going at it with a can opener and a soup spoon. She is very ready to have the dam thing out of her head.

whoop! Progress

Jan 19, 2006 in Charise, General Family

We now have an appointment for next tuesday afternoon with UCSF (Charise called and chased people this morning). A Dr. Parsa, who apparently is supposed to be the best person for her type of tumor (according to the scheduler, so I’m not sure what that means). I’m going to try and get us out of town for a couple days I think.

UCSF

Jan 18, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Well, we got a call from the person who apparently puts you into the computer, so that some other person can call you back in a couple days to schedule the consult (not the surgery mind you). *sigh* whole thing is just moving so…slow… but at least it is in fact moving.

Slow and benign

Jan 14, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Ok, some more good news. My Mom pulled some strings, through a friend of hers, to get UCSF to take some action, this was helpful since they completely lost or misrouted the original stuff we sent last week. Based on the data they have a UCSF neurologist said they think it is a slow growth tumor, meaning not a time bomb, and probable benign, meaning not cancerous. That pretty much agrees with what we heard this morning, which is reassuring. Nothing is of course a guarantee.

Anyway we should have an appointment mid next week, and then hopefully go up there shortly their after for an exam and to schedule things.

This is a nice relief. We have been having a lot stress around getting things going with them.

Charise health update

Jan 14, 2006 in Charise, General Family

Hi Folks,

I have been a little uncommunicative lately and thought I would give a quick update on why and what’s going on.

Recently Charise went in for an eye checkup because she was having some headaches and blurred vision, after finding some abnormalities they sent her to get an MRI, and to see her Doctor. This was actually a very good catch on the part of the Ophthalmologist that was there.

Unfortunately she was diagnosed with 5-6cm brain tumor in the back of her head near the spine (sort of between the halves of the brain). Fortunately, the tumor does appear to be operable based on a meeting with a neurologist today. The tumor is also in a relatively, as such things go, good spot for surgical removal without lots of collateral trauma (it is too large for non invasive techniques). Also some preliminary indicators through die saturation suggest that it might be benign. However we are waiting on some blood work and won’t know anything for sure until a pathologist can actually examine it directly. Still all good news given the potential down sides.

We are currently beating the bush to get an appointment with UCSF, which outside of John Hopkins, is supposed to be the best in the world for this type of procedure. Idealy we will have the procedure done there.

Right now we are looking at probable a week post op hospital stay and then a two month or so recovery at home, however all that subject to best case scenarios.

Well that is the long and short of it, needless to say we are little stressed but after today’s meeting we are actually feeling fairly secure and confident that things are going to turn out ok. Of all the possible things that this could have been (MS etc) this is in many ways is the least threatening and most actionable.

I will probable be in and out of work a bit leading up to the surgery but Charise will stay out until she is fully recovered (still working on that arm thing as well).

Thanks for your patience and understanding

Surgery done

Nov 11, 2005 in Charise, General Family

Charise is awake and doning really well. None of the problems from last time. We are discharging now, just a bit after noon. Took a bit longer to get out then I thought it would. Oddly it’s Charise’s elbow that is hurting her not the wrist… course the pain meds and block havn’t worn off yet. We are home now and she ate some pudding and is crashed out.

Surgery Tomorrow

Nov 10, 2005 in Charise, General Family, griffon

Charise is going in for her surgery tomorrow morning (early). With a little luck will be done by lunch but given how long things took last time I’m not holding my breath.
My Mom is going to take kaily over night just in case there are complications.

Oh! I should have some new Kaily pictures up tomrrow or friday.

Break update

Oct 28, 2005 in Charise

Charise is back under the knife on Nov 10th. They will be placing two temporary pins in her wrist. Right now it sounds like she will be out until Feb06.

Probable one more night

Sep 11, 2005 in Charise, onthego

Bloging from the hospital again. Charise is doing a bit better today with some new drugs… She had a real tuff night last night.
A Doc will come by this afternoon to check on her but it sounds like they will keep her one more night.

admited

Sep 10, 2005 in Charise

ok so charise is in a lot of pain. looks like they are going to admit her for the night to keep it managed.
I saw the post op exray, they put two bolts into her elbow and pulled it staight forcing it to unlock

FYI if any of these posts look or read odd it’s because I’m posting them from my cel.

UPDATE: I got home about 11 after charise sacked out jacked up on all kinds of drugs and still complaining about it hurting. We should know more in the morning. I would have crashed in the room with her but they didn’t have any fold out chairs (zero accommodations really).

Out of surgery

Sep 10, 2005 in Charise

Out of surgery, two hours later then expected.

Charise is out of the OR but still in recovery. The Doc said everthing whent well but working the joint hard will be the keyto getting mobility back into the arm.

Bumps in the road

Sep 09, 2005 in Charise

Well the moved Charise surgery all around, but it’s still going to be on friday. They are making her have it done at a less desirable hospital and at a less desirable time. Apparently this is just workmen’s comp being arbitrary, or not wanting to pay for it at the Doctors preferred location. Pretty screwed up but I guess not critical. They also said that they probable didn’t have to pay for the expanded daycare that Kaily will need, cheap bastards, no wonder everyone seems to sue them eventually. The madding thing is that we can’t just go and use are own better insurance, if we do then we loose the pay for Charise being off work, how dumb is that, we save them money and then penalize us. I guess this is all symptoms of a system that is rife with fraud, but not being in the con-man bucket I’m starting to feel a little kicked around.
